AZtecAsbestos

Fibre analysis in the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

AZtecAsbestos is an innovative software solution  that specialises in the detection of fibres. AZtecAsbestos applies a machine learning model to automatically detect fibres, which are then analysed with EDS, and classified.

AZtecAsbestos enables:

  •  Reliable fibre detection
  •  Fast screening of samples
  •  Automation for multiple sample runs – minimum instrument down time

Automated SEM-based analysis

AZtecAsbestos is an innovative software solution that is optimised to detect fibres with a pre-trained machine learning model. The automated SEM-based analysis detects, analyses and classifies fibres according to their species. EDS is used to determine the fibre composition, and then the detected fibres are classified according to a customisable classification scheme that comes with the AZtecAsbestos user profile.

Specifically designed to detect fibres with minimal user input, the machine learning model detects fibres without the need to threshold. This offers two key benefits: 1) improved consistency, and 2) reduced time and effort to set up experiments.

Accurate element identification and quantification

AZtecAsbestos is easy to use and comes with Step Notes to make training of new users even easier. They also help ensure that everyone follows the same analytical routine.

The user profile also comes with presets (e.g. image scan size) to help you get started. Acquisition settings can be modified (and saved to be reused) to better reflect your needs.

AZtecAsbestos uses Oxford Instruments’ Ultim Max Infinity or Xplore EDS detectors with AZtecLive Tru-Q IQ Algorithms to ensure accurate element identification and quantification, even at the highest levels of throughput.

Benefit from world-class particle analysis

AZtecAsbestos can effectively separate fibres, even if they are curved or overlapping, and accurately measure the true length of fibres when they are not straight.

✔️ Flexible

  • Easily edit provided classification scheme
  • Terminate analyses automatically if user defined criteria are met - e.g. 20 fibres of a certain species
  • Perform in depth follow-up investigations of particles within the same software suite
  • Works with a wide range of SEMs
  • Option to further apply Morphology and EDS filters to focus only on the fibres of interest and save time and resources – automatically acquire additional data from fibres satisfying certain criteria (e.g. aspect ratio, composition)
  • Manual and automated reacquisition

✔️ Accurate

  • AZtecAsbestos supports large area, automated runs (with either overlapping or spacing options between the fields)
  • Fibre reconstruction for the accurate measurement of the number of fibres in the sample

✔️ Reporting

  • Choose from a wide variety Report templates available with AZtecFeature e.g. particle classification

Asbestos detection and classification methodology

With AZtecAsbestos, you can immediately start acquiring data. The machine learning algorithm automatically triggers as soon as you collect a BSE image and fibres are detected. Subsequently, the electron beam is driven to each of the fibres detected, and EDS data is acquired from them. Quantified EDS spectra for each fibre is filtered through the AZtecAsbestos classification scheme. Fibres are classified according to the class criteria they meet.

The AZtecAsbestos classification scheme is customisable and can be tailored to specific needs, allowing for additional classes and subclasses to be added or existing classes to be edited.

Xplore Compact detector

Xplore Compact detector

The XploreCompact for TTM is an EDS detector designed for routine analysis in the SEM. The introduction of Xplore complements our comprehensive EDS portfolio and means that AZtecLive real-time chemical imaging is now available to all users. Available for tabletop microscopes, too.

AZtecFeature software

AZtecFeature

AZtecFeature run times are optimsed by using the aspect ratio of the particle to decide whether EDS analysis should be performed, studying the particles/fibres of interest. Results produced show how many fibres are of the dangerous types, with asbestos composition and a very high aspect ratio found in a sample.

Ultim Max Infinity detector

Ultim Max Infinity

Ultim Max Infinity EDS detectors use high-end technology to deliver unparalleled speed and sensitivity without compromising on accuracy or quality. This range of detectors combines the largest sensor sizes (up to 170 mm2) with Extreme electronics to deliver remarkable performance.
